A total of 287 Kenyans have applied for the nine seats available in the East Africa Legislative Assembly (Eala).
The application deadline was November 2.
The names have been communicated to the respective political parties, who have until Wednesday this week to nominate their preferred representatives and return the names to parliament.
The joint Committee on the election of East Africa Legislative Assembly, EALA members met on Monday for a pre-nomination briefing.
The meeting was jointly presided over by Clerk of the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye and his Counterpart from the National Assembly Samuel Njoroge was also attended by the Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah, Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, Dan Maanzo (Makueni), and Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia.
The early morning meeting deliberated on the modalities of the nomination and election of the nine members to represent Kenya at the Arusha-based court.
Only 287 out of 348 applicants—145 from the dominant Kenya Kwanza alliance and 96 from the Azimio la Umoja coalition—have been selected. KNC and NRA have one each, while 16 applicants filed as independents. 29 did not state their position.
On November 17th, Kenya Kwanza and Azimio will both present a total of 27 candidates for election; Kenya Kwanza will have 15 candidates and Azimio will have 12.
Only nine—five from Kenya Kwanza and four from Azimio La Umoja—will be chosen to serve in Arusha.
Political parties have until Wednesday at 9 a.m. to submit the names of the 287 applicants they prefer as their nominees, with nominations taking place the same day at county hall.
The nominees will be voted through the secret ballot on November 17th.
