Robert Alai to Winnie Odinga: ODM is not a family inheritance

Vocal Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Rober Alai has launched an attack on the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga’s younger daughter, Winnie Odinga, over perceiving the political outfit as a family inheritance.

Taking to his X account on Monday, January 19, 2026, Alai reacted to Winnie Odinga’s stance on the purge targeting a section of ODM leaders regarded as party rebels amid coalition talks between ODM and President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party heading into the next general election in 2027.

While addressing the public at Nairobi’s Kamukunji Grounds, in Kibra on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Winnie Odinga said no one will be chased out of ODM, referring particularly to Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino and Nairobi Senator, who also acts as ODM Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna.

She cautioned that if anyone is chased out of ODM, the party will be deserted, as it is a people’s political party.

Hakuna mtu atatolewa kwenye hiki chama. Wanaongea sana na tukiwauliza maswali wanasema tutoke kwenye chama. Tukitoka watabaki na nani kwenye hiki chama? Hiki chama ni cha waanchi, tukitoka wanannchi wanaenda,” Winnie said.

However, in a quick rejoinder, Robert Alai, who has been calling for the ouster of Sifuna, launched another attack aimed at Winnie Odinga on ODM’s membership.

Alai has affirmed that Winnie Odinga has no capacity to defend both Babu and Sifuna, the two who have stood their ground on the party’s direction heading into the next general election.

”She can’t protect them when she can’t even be in the Central Management Committee. ODM isn’t a family inheritance. She need not push her luck,” Alai argued.

Alai’s attack on Winnie Odinga comes shortly after former Roots Party presidential running mate Justina Wamae has now suggested that the Orange party’s leadership should be succeeded by its former leader, Raila Odinga’s children.

Taking to her official X account on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Wamae argued that after Raila’s death, his children are the ones supposed to succeed to all his investments, including the ODM party. After the demise of Odinga, his elder brother Oburu Oginga took the party leadership amid internalwrangles threatening its existence.

However, according to Wamae, Raila’s siblings should not be entitled to his investments, including the leadership of the ODM party.

“Upon the death of Baba, all his investments, including ODM leadership, should be succeeded by his children, not siblings,” Wame stated.

Wamae’s remarks come moments after Raila’s children, Winnie Odinga and Raila Junior, drew a large crowd to Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi’s Kibra slum, signalling the continued influence of the Odinga family in national politics and within the ODM party.
