Shafa Bilal Shaklane has been sentenced to 20 year in prison for defiling and killing his 17 year old niece in Garissa County.
Justice Onyiego handed down the sentence after finding that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Court heard that the offence was committed on November 16, 2025, at Borehole 5 in Fafi Sub-County, Garissa County.
A 13 year old minor, who is also the deceased’s younger sister, gave crucial testimony before the court detailing the events of the night.
The witness told the court that they had been sleeping inside the same house on separate mattresses when she saw the accused approach the deceased and began touching her inappropriately.
She further testified that when the deceased resisted, the accused allegedly took a scarf and strangled her while pushing her against a wall.
According to the witness, the teenager died shortly after the attack.
Medical evidence presented before court confirmed that the deceased died from hypoxia caused by strangulation.
In the judgment, Justice Onyiego observed that the child witness had no apparent reason to falsely accuse the convict.
“The minor did not have reason to lie against an uncle with whom she had no grudge,” the court stated.
The judge found that the prosecution’s evidence was credible, consistent and sufficient to secure a conviction.
