Kangundo Road Officers Caught Picking Bribes Punished

Three traffic cops have been identified after being captured on camera reportedly accepting bribes from public service cars on Nairobi’s Kangundo Road.

The Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) summoned them on Monday, July 26 for formal disciplinary measures.

“Following a video clip that went viral showing three traffic police officers colluding with two members of the public in engaging in misconduct along Kangundo Road, Nairobi, the Internal Affairs Unit, NPS commenced an investigation and positively identified the officers involved,” read a statement from NPS released on Monday.

The three will be reprimanded internally, according to IAU director Mohamed Amin, and then notified of the next steps.

This could mean a transfer or even a demotion.

On an unknown date, officers from Buruburu police station were on duty when a photographer who had reportedly been watching their operations through proxies stationed along the road.

The officers are seen stopping the matatus in the video before two members of the public (a man and a woman) go up to the matatus and accept a bribe on behalf of the officers.

Police have been accused of seeking bribes from motorists, particularly public service vehicle drivers, on numerous occasions.
