With the reversed curfew times now in effect, alot of motorists have found themselves in accidents while rushing to beat the clock. – By Gerald Gekara.
The Insurance umbrella body, Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) has discredited allegations that accidents past curfew hours would not be compensated.
“Curfew hours is not one of the exclusion currently existing in motor polices. No one can therefore exclude coverage because you are driving past curfew hours. We would urge Kenyans to obey government directives, but nevertheless, your insurance cover covers you at all times as long as you have a valid contract with your insurance company,” said IRA Chief Executive Officer Godfrey Kiptum.
The allegations were made by a professional body, Association of Kenya Professional Insurance Agents (AKPIA) who said motorists were on their own if they get any accident past curfew hours.
“Insurance companies, agencies, brokers, would like to inform you that driving past curfew hours without essential services authorization or valid emergency reasons could render your motor insurance claim invalid,” AKPIA said.
The authority further cautioned insurance companies against circumventing policy to scam unsuspecting Kenyans.
Motorists Association has called out insurers for their attempt at altering the policy.
“Insurance Associations must stop this idea of sneaking ultra vires rules to deny cover to vehicle owners driving at night. Nobody drives during curfew hours for fun or sport! If you find a motorist at night they have reasons why they are late.” Motorist Association tweeted.
