According to senior official Abdullah Abdullah, President Ashraf Ghani has left Afghanistan, setting the way for the Taliban to take control of the country after the terrorist organization marched on Kabul.
Following a dramatic Taliban attack that halted at Kabul’s gates, Ghani evacuated the Afghan capital on Sunday.
“He left Afghanistan in a difficult moment, God hold him accountable,” Abdullah Abdullah, the head of the Afghan National Reconciliation Council, said.
The militants demanded talks, claiming they wanted to avert a conflict that could result in innocent casualties.
According to TOLO, an Afghan news program, the president departed the country with his “trusted aides.”
American diplomats were evacuated from their embassy by chopper after a swift advance, who were poised to run Afghanistan again 20 years after they were toppled by US-led forces following the September 11 attacks on the United States.
Suhail Shaheen, the group’s spokesman, claimed the group would preserve women’s rights as well as the freedoms of journalists and diplomats.
“We promise the people, particularly in Kabul,” Shaheen said, “that their properties and lives are protected.”
Despite billions of dollars spent by the US and others to strengthen up local Afghan government forces, the Taliban’s ease of advance has astonished the world.
Kabul might hold out for at least three months, according to a US intelligence estimate released just last week.
