West Ham Secures 4-2 Opening Victory Against Newcastle

West Ham United came from behind twice to overcome Newcastle in a thrilling contest at St James’ Park, kicking off their Premier League campaign in style.

The Hammers were behind 2-1 at halftime but fought back with goals from Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek, and Michail Antonio in the second half.

Newcastle took the lead after only five minutes, as Callum Wilson headed home Allan Saint-cross Maximin’s to the joy of the 50,000-strong crowd.

Despite the flag initially coming up against Jarrod Bowen for offside, West Ham equalized midway through the half when a VAR review determined Aaron Cresswell’s cross-shot had gone all the way into the net undisturbed.

Antonio’s penalty was saved by debutant keeper Freddie Woodman after Pablo Fornals was fouled inside the box, but Soucek reacted first to the rebound to put the Hammers up for the first time.

Antonio then sealed the victory by slamming in a tremendous strike for his 47th Premier League goal for the Hammers, equaling Paolo di Canio’s club record.
