Airbnb Responds to Allegations of Drug Trafficking in Kenya

Airbnb has addressed recent allegations that its rental properties are being used as hubs for drug trafficking and abuse in Kenya.

In a statement issued, the company explained that its brand name is often used as a catch-all term for various short-term rental platforms, leading to misunderstandings that all such accommodations fall under Airbnb’s purview.

The company emphasized its commitment to preventing illegal activities across its listings, both in Kenya and globally, and stated that it actively works to identify properties used for illicit purposes.

“We are working to identify locations used for illegal activities,” the statement read, reinforcing that Airbnb enforces strict community standards and policies for hosts and guests alike.

Airbnb also highlighted its security measures, including a 24-hour safety line and the option for guests to cancel bookings if they feel uncomfortable with a rental.

The company further assured that it collaborates with law enforcement agencies to address criminal activities and will share relevant data when necessary.

This response follows concerns raised by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), which warned that the privacy of short-term rentals could facilitate drug misuse and other illegal activities.

NACADA has called for stricter regulations and better screening of guests by hosts.
