Alar Karis Sworn in As Estonia President

On Monday, Alar Karis took the oath of office as Estonia’s new president.

Outgoing Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid said she was “proud” to have served her country for five years during the inauguration ceremony conducted in the country’s Parliament (Riigikogu).

“It has been an honor to serve the best country in the world as Head of State for 5 years! Today this journey comes to an end. My sincere gratitude to everyone I met on the road.”

Karis covered a wide range of themes in his first speech as president, from the necessity for Estonia to maintain good relations with its friends to the problems faced by Estonian families as a result of high electricity prices to his wish for a strong and unified Europe.

Karis, 63, was elected Estonia’s fifth president since the country’s 1991 independence with 72 votes out of the required 68 in the country’s 101-member parliament’s second round of voting on Aug. 31.

Karis was born in Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city
