Following his departure from Inter Milan, former Arsenal and Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez has joined Marseille on a free transfer, the French club confirmed on Wednesday.Â
The attacker, who has 143 Chilean caps, reportedly signed a contract at the Velodrome after passing a physical. He had a one-year deal, a club spokesman informed AFP.
The 33-year-old Sanchez recently ended his relationship with Inter, and he was greeted by several hundred devoted fans upon his late Tuesday arrival at Marseille airport.
His arrival gives Marseille a big boost as they prepare to play in the Champions League again.
After placing second in Ligue 1, they advanced to the group stage of this season’s tournament. However, they later lost their Chilean ex-coach Jorge Sampaoli, and ex-Croatia defender Igor Tudor took his place.
After Udinese, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Inter, Marseille will be Sanchez’s sixth club in Europe.
His three years at Inter saw him contribute to their 2021 Serie A championship success.
