A KDF officer based in Garissa Military Camp has admitted to shooting to death Kassif Yussuf, 27, two years ago.
Hassan Mire was testifying in an inquest into the death of the 27-year old civilian, which occurred on August 1, 2018, at the main gate of the military camp.
Allegedly, the deceased was challenged to identify himself by one of the officers identified as Hassan Mire as the requirement is, but he did not comply instead he reached to grab his rifle prompting Mire to shoot him twice on the chest.
During the cross-examination on Monday afternoon by the victim’s lawyer Steve Mogaka, Mire said that he shot the victim on the leg to immobilize him and later proceeded to shot him on the chest since he wasn’t sure of his intentions.
Mire went ahead to tell the court that he feared the victim might be in possession of a hand grenade.

According to a past witness, Julius Muiruri based at the same military camp told the court that the deceased tried to run away from them after he tried to snatch the rifle.
He further added that the shots fired by Mire led to the death of Yussuf as he shot on target after he saw the deceased fall down and tried to remove something from his pocket.
