Arsenal’s chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League this season were dashed on Monday when they were defeated 3-0 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Gunners were unable to reclaim their spot in the Premier League top four having been overtaken by arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who crushed Newcastle United 5-1 on Sunday.

Crystal Palace took Arsenal to the sword in the first half, with goals from forwards Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jordan Ayew giving the clinical hosts a deserved 2-0 halftime lead.

After the break, Arsenal improved marginally, with Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard both missing good chances to get their team back into the game. Wilfried Zaha scored a penalty 16 minutes from time to put the game out of reach for the visitors.

After full-time, Arsenal’s coach Mikel Arteta shunned his side’s display and apologised to Arsenal fans for losing in such a dominant fashion against their London rivals.
