DAP-K Party, Rejects Azimio Zoning

The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) and Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) party have both spoken out against Azimio La Umoja member parties’ proposal to zone some areas ahead of the August 9 elections.

Deputy party leader Ayub Savula on Thursday said DAP-K will not withdraw its aspirants in favour of those from affiliate parties in the coalition.

“We have not signed any agreement about zoning as Azimio affiliates and we are going to resist any such move. Such a thing does not exist in the agreement we signed,” Savula said.

He said zoning will hurt Raila’s bid and give a chance to the Kenya Kwanza opponents as well as kill small parties that support the coalition presidential aspirant.

His sentiments were echoed by DAP-K candidates in Busia who criticized the county’s zoning plan, claiming that it only favors the ODM.

Busia Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi, who is running for governor, stated that candidates who met in Busia town agreed to support ODM leader Raila Odinga’s bid but not the zoning proposal.

“We need clarification and assurance from the Azimio secretariat because DAP-K candidates and their supporters are in the dark. We must allow democracy to prevail by letting candidates face off in the election,” the deputy governor said.

The meeting brought together 30 aspirants led by Mr. Mulomi, Evalyne Ikwii (Woman Representative aspirant), and MP aspirants Dr Isaac Omeri (Nambale), John Makokha (Matayos), Lawi Mamai (Teso North), and Norbert Wangalwa (Butula), as well as MCA aspirants.
