Babu Owino: Gen Zs and Millennials Must Seek Leadership Posts In 2027

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has urged Kenya’s youth—specifically Gen Zs and Millennials—to go beyond just voting and actively run for office in the 2027 general elections if they want to transform the country.

Speaking at a public forum, Babu emphasized that while casting a ballot is a political act, true influence comes from holding positions of power and using them wisely.

“Everybody who casts a ballot is a politician—they are engaging in a political process,” Babu stated. “But the question is, once we elect leaders, what do they become? Some become dealers instead of leaders. Some are on a mission to destroy the nation, while others come with a vision to transform it.”

The vocal legislator, serving his second term in the National Assembly, argued that Gen Zs and Millennials—who make up 65–70% of the Kenyan population—have the numbers to produce leaders across the board, including a president.

“Don’t just vote. Present yourselves for elective seats,” he urged. “You can be president, governor, senator, MP, MCA—you name it. And if you’re not invited to the table, break that table.”

Babu has long been an advocate for youth participation in governance and was vocal during the historic June 2024 Gen Z protests, which played a key role in President William Ruto’s decision to reject the controversial Finance Bill 2024 despite its passage by Parliament.

He reiterated that meaningful change won’t come by waiting on others but by stepping into the ring and leading with purpose. “We must raise leaders who are focused on service—not self-interest,” Babu concluded.
