Torrential rains triggered what officials are calling Bali’s worst floods in a decade, killing 14 people and leaving two missing, mainly in Denpasar and six of Bali’s eight regions.
Heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday caused rivers to burst their banks and triggered landslides, sweeping buildings, cars, and residents away. Roads including those to the international airport were disrupted, though no flights have been cancelled.
About 500 people were evacuated to emergency shelters such as schools and mosques.
Local authorities say water levels are now receding, and rescue crews including 125 rescuers in Bali are intensifying efforts to find the missing.
Over 500 military personnel have been deployed to clear mud and debris from streets and restore accessibility.
Meanwhile, the neighboring province of East Nusa Tenggara also suffered heavy rains, where landslides and flooding have killed at least four people and caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure.
