Five people were shot dead in the Ntulili district of Tigania West on Monday evening in a suspected revenge assault after ten camels were killed by unknown people.

The killings occur as tensions rise along the Meru-Isiolo border over a long-running conflict that has cost 18 lives so far this year.

The incident was confirmed by Meru County Commissioner Fred Ndunga. Police say some people were shot dead and others beheaded in the early Tuesday incident. Nine spent bullet cartridges were still lying at the scene of the attack.

According to residents, the attack by armed bandits started at around 7 pm when a Boda Boda rider and passenger were shot dead near KK Primary school along Meru-Muriri road.

A vehicle plying the same route was also shot at leaving one dead while the two others were shot dead in the bush near KK primary school.

Mr. Marimba Aruyaru, a resident, said the attackers started hearing gunshots at 7 PM, which lasted until 10 PM.

“Police officers came later after the attackers had left. Among those killed are two brothers. One of them was guarding KK primary school while the other was herding goats. The bodies were found at 12am,” Mr. Aruyaru said.

Police said no arrest had been made but investigations are ongoing.
