Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, the long-serving governor of Uganda’s Central Bank, has died.

Mutebile, 72, died in a Nairobi hospital early Sunday morning.

On December 31, 2021, Mutebile was brought to the hospital after collapsing owing to diabetes issues.

He has been in and out of the hospital for the same difficulties throughout the years.

He was a seasoned professional economist and reformer who oversaw the design and implementation of Uganda’s Economic Reform Program, which helped the country recover from the 1970s and 1980s economic crises.

From 1992 until 2001, he was Secretary of the Treasury before being appointed Governor.
