AFDB Commissions Sh586 Million Dam in Baringo

The dam, which is anticipated to serve more than 10,000 households, will improve irrigated agriculture in the Kiboi and Barwessa schemes

A Sh586 million dam has been funded by the African Development Bank (AFDB) in Barwessa Ward Baringo North Sub County to promote irrigation farming.

When the construction of the Kaptiony Kiboi footbridge dam was formally started, Governor Benjamin Cheboi spoke at the site and asserted that the 500,000 cubic meter dam would enhance water supplies in the Kerio Valley area and increase food security.

The dam, which is anticipated to serve more than 10,000 households, will improve irrigated agriculture in the Kiboi and Barwessa schemes, which have not yet reached their maximum potential in terms of food production, according to Cheboi, who was joined by local MP Joseph Makilap and MCA Josephat Lokorio.

“This project implemented by the county government in collaboration with AFDB is meant to bring wealth to our residents in areas that we know irrigated farming is doing very well,” he said.

He added that once locals adopt irrigated farming, the difficulties of holding harambees to earn money for their children’s tuition will be a thing of the past because they will be able to support themselves through agriculture.

While farmers work to buy high-quality seeds from Kenya Seed in order to receive good returns, Cheboi added that his administration will support them by giving out certified mango and avocado seedlings.

The governor encouraged the locals to take advantage of the water resource by engaging in serious horticulture and food crop farming in order to enable them to earn sustainable incomes

The governor gave the contractor nine months to complete the project.
