Benson Mutura elected Nairobi county assembly speaker

Bernard Mutura is the new assembly speaker in an election that was done today in the county assembly chambers.

The jubilee nominee for the seat had an easy ride after garnering 123 votes.  The voting was done virtually as a measure to Covid 19 spread.

Constitutionally he needed 85 votes which is the two third.

Acting speaker pronounced Mutura the winner, ’I hereby declare Mr. Benson Mutura the new Nairobi county assembly speaker, having attained more than two thirds majority vote.’’

Mutura was up against six other candidates after former speaker withdrew from the race to back the speaker elect.

He takes over from former speaker Beatrice Elachi who resigned earlier in the week siting frustration, threats to her life among the reason she resigned

However, Mutura takes over a house that has been marred by chaos and divided as different political interests seem to play at the assembly.

He took oath of office thus taking over the role officially.

In his acceptance speech, he showed his readiness to work with the whole house ‘’I understand the e roles of the speaker and I will attend to all regardless the part’’

He extended his thank you message to the president Kenyatta jubilee party and members of the minority party that all voted for him.

He also pledged to support the NMS
