The Beyond Zero Initiative, founded by Kenya’s former First Lady, Margaret Kenyatta, has delivered truckloads of aid.
Following recent heavy rains and floods that devastated Mathare, Nairobi County, Beyond Zero provided essential supplies to affected families.
The Mathare Social Justice Center hosted the donation event, where mattresses, blankets, and sanitary towels were distributed. These items provided much-needed relief to a community struggling to recover from the flood’s destruction.
The recent downpours caused significant damage, particularly in low-lying areas like Mathare. Homes and infrastructure were severely impacted, displacing residents and leaving them in urgent need of basic necessities.
Beyond Zero, recognizing the urgency of the situation, mobilized resources to support the flood victims.
“We are here to offer our support to the residents of Mathare who have been severely impacted by the floods,” said Beatrice Koki, a Beyond Zero representative. “It is our duty to ensure they receive the basic items needed to restore some normalcy to their lives.”
The Mathare Social Justice Center, known for its community outreach, played a vital role in the distribution process. Volunteers ensured the donated items reached the most vulnerable community members.
Residents expressed their deep appreciation for the timely intervention. “We lost almost everything in the floods,” said Rose Kombo, a resident. “These mattresses and blankets will help us a lot as we try to rebuild our lives.”
Another recipient, Emily Nyanjong, highlighted the importance of sanitary towels, often overlooked in disaster relief but essential for maintaining hygiene and dignity.
Beyond Zero’s initiative signifies more than just providing physical items. It represents hope and solidarity during a challenging time.
By addressing immediate needs, Beyond Zero helps alleviate the disaster’s impact and allows the community to focus on recovery and building resilience.
