Cop Rashid’s Prosecution Adjourned As Rival Activists Clash

The prosecution of Rashid Ahmed, a Pangani-based police officer, has been postponed until January 26, 2023.

The hearing was postponed by Justice Kanyi Kimondo when it was discovered that officer Rashid was ill and was being treated at Madina Hospital in Eastleigh.

Rashid’s lawyer, Danstan Omari, informed the court that his client had not been physically served with summons to appear as the court had previously ordered.

“My client has not to be served with summons to appear in court today. We came to learn that he is expected to appear in court this morning in the court’s portal. Since my client is currently unwell l seek another date with my undertaking to present him in court for a plea, ” Omari said.

The DPP informed the court, through state counsel Wangui Gichuhi, that they filed the summons to have Rashid appear in court on his employer, the Inspector General of Police, but have yet to get a response from the office.

Rashid was also directed by the judge to present a medical report in court proving that he is now hospitalized.

The cop was set to enter a plea today to murder charges in the deaths of two boys, Jamal Mohammed and Mohammed Dhair Kheri, after the DPP recommended that he be prosecuted.

According to the court documents, he murdered the pair on March 31, 2017 at Amal Plaza in Eastleigh.

Outside the court building, protesters gathered to support the prosecution of Rashid while a rival group advocated for his release.

The groups engaged in shouting matches outside the heavily guarded court before police officers urged the groups to vacate the area.
