The Catholic Church has demanded a paradigm shift to Governance to address runaway greed and corruption.
In a live broadcast Easter Message to Kenyans, Archbishop Anthony Muheria of Nyeri said despite the Corona pandemic, greed and corruption was still rife and evident and urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to deal decisively with the vice.
Muheria said selfish interests are being manifested in some gestures in the management of Coronavirus and said this must stop.
“Not even the fear of Corona death had deterred corruption and selfish interests. This is sad”, Muheria said.
He compared the current situation in Kenya to the biblical disciples of Jesus, who abandoned their master at his hour of need, at the hands of his tormentors.
But unlike St. Peter and Mark who repented, Kenyan leaders have decided to go the Judas way.
“There is no need for living a lie. If you have three cars, sell one and donate to the poor. It is hypocritical to pose before cameras after giving alms to the poor”, Muheria said in the hard-hitting sermon broadcast.
The Archbishop said Kenya’s Conference of Bishops will stop at nothing to ensure greed and corruption are rooted out of the Kenyan society.
He warned that if this unbridled cupidity for money and power is not addressed, societal ills will render positions of power useless.
“You need not accumulate wealth to buy your way to leadership. A happy people are a blessing to a leader”;, he said.
Muheria said attempts must be made to ensure the basic minimum needs of Kenyans are met.
” Sacrifice your lunch for that starving neighbor. Don’t hoard food while others sleep hungry”; Muheria said.
The Prelate said the challenges Kenya and the world faces today is as a result of the inability to deal decisively with all forms of greed.
He said political leaders habitually manipulate the poor and the vulnerable and said this must stop.
“Even the stampede caused by the Coronavirus has failed to tame greed and corruption”; he said.
