Azimio Side Poke Ruto to Share His 2,000-Acre Taita Taveta Land with ‘Hustlers’
Deputy President William Ruto has been chastised by a group of leaders affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party over his ownership of the Taita Taveta piece of land.
This comes after DP Ruto stated at a Kenya Kwanza economic forum on Tuesday that he acquired the 2,536-acre Mata farm after helping former Taveta MP Basil Criticos in repaying a loan owed to the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC).
However, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna have dared the DP to distribute the land to hustlers.
Speaking in Vihiga on Wednesday, Junet urged DP Ruto to divide the land among impoverished Taita Taveta residents if he truly supports Kenyans from low-income background.
“Nimeshangaa kuna watu wanasema wanataka kusaidia watu wa chini, mtu ako na elfu mbili mia tano shamba kule Taveta anaweza kusaidia watu wa chini? Kama unataka kusaidida watu anza kugawa hio shamba kwanza,” said Junet.
Sifuna, echoing Junet’s remarks, accused Ruto of always defending any land-grabbing allegations leveled against him with claims that he was awarded with colleagues.
Kila shamba inasemekana Ruto ameiba, huwa anasema amepewa. And we are telling him to start portioning the land to the hustlers of Taita Taveta,” Sifuna said.
Ruto was initially accused of forcibly evicting squatters who had settled on the land and encircling it with an electric fence shortly after acquiring it.
The DP was also accused of illegally diverting water to the farm, leaving other area residents without water.
Previous court documents claimed that Criticos unsuccessfully attempted to evict the squatters from the land before selling it to DP Ruto.
