EACC Intensifies Probe into County Officials Over Ksh. 1.6 Billion in Alleged Corruption

By Michelle Ndaga

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is pursuing corruption cases involving 822 county officials, with the total alleged misappropriation exceeding Ksh. 1.6 billion.

The investigations cover a range of misconduct, including irregular recruitments, payroll manipulation, unauthorized allowances, and embezzlement of mortgage and car loan funds.

EACC CEO Abdi A. Mohamud revealed that the commission has concluded 89 significant cases over the past eight months, forwarding 82 to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) with recommendations for prosecution.

High-profile cases involve four county governors (current and former), two former Cabinet Secretaries, a Principal Secretary, and several top officials from state corporations.

Investigations are ongoing against five serving governors and 11 former governors for alleged embezzlement, conflicts of interest, money laundering, and unexplained wealth.

The commission has also recovered 12 properties valued at about Ksh. 600 million and over Ksh. 105 million in cash since January, while proactive actions prevented potential losses of Ksh. 7.2 billion.

In a separate case, six senior officials in Busia County face scrutiny over a Ksh. 1.4 billion tender scandal involving 26 proxy companies.

The EACC says the evidence collected will support ongoing prosecutions.
