East and Southern African Nations Engage in Discussion to Eradicate Antimicrobial Resistance

A critical regional forum addressing the pressing issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has brought together health officials and policymakers from 16 East and Southern African nations in Nairobi.

The purpose of the “Regional Meeting to Review Antimicrobial Stewardship Guidelines and Implementation of AMR Surveillance,” which began today and runs through August 12th 2023, is to develop cooperative tactics and a coordinated approach to battle the evolving danger of AMR and protect public health.

The need of coordinated measures to address AMR was emphasised by Cabinet Secretary of Health Nakumicha S. Wafula in her introductory remarks.

The nations of East and Southern Africa have acknowledged the serious regional threat posed by AMR as well as the worldwide concern it poses.

The CS pushed for a comprehensive One-Health Approach that combined efforts in the areas of environmental health, animal health, and human health in order to stop the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance while encouraging responsible antibiotic usage.

In order to effectively address this global problem, the Cabinet Secretary further emphasised the significance of ongoing cooperation with foreign allies and the global community.

The Cabinet Secretary thanked the East, Central, and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for organising the workshop and emphasised its importance in combating AMR collaboratively.

The regional gathering provided an essential forum for the discussion of best practises, capacity building, and knowledge exchange.
