Ethiopia has confirmed that a recent outbreak infecting at least nine people in the country’s south was caused by the deadly Marburg virus, World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday.
The announcement, made via a post on social media platform X, marks the first official confirmation of the viral hemorrhagic disease in the region.
Marburg virus is closely related to Ebola and can cause severe, often fatal, illness in humans.
Ethiopia has previously faced outbreaks of other infectious diseases, and health officials are urging local communities to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases promptly.
