Evergreen Ship That Blocked Suez Canal Finally Released

After Egypt negotiated a compensation agreement with the ship’s owners and insurance, a container ship that blocked the Suez Canal in March, hurting global trade, is finally departing the waterway.

After being held for three months, the Ever Given was set to weigh anchor in a televised ceremony.

During that time, the ship was held near the canal’s midpoint, the Great Bitter Lake.

The deal’s terms were not disclosed, but Egypt had requested $550 million (£397 million) in compensation.

The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and is the shortest sea link between Asia and Europe at 193 kilometers (120 miles).
