Facebook Operations Could Be Halted Due To Hate Speech

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Commissioner Dr Danvas Makori.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Commissioner Danvas Makori has warned that Facebook operations in the country could be suspended in seven days if the US tech giant fails to act on online hate speech.

According to Makori, the social media giant has consistently violated Kenyan hate speech laws and failed to follow recommendations on taming online hate speech.

This follows a recent Global Witness investigation that revealed Facebook’s failure to detect ads containing hate speech messages.

According to the report, Facebook approved 20 advertisements (10 in English and 10 in Swahili) promoting ethnic violence and calling for rape, slaughter, and beheading of individuals.
