Five Students Behind Dorm Blaze, Stare At Jail term

Five students from Masaani Girls Secondary School were arrested by Machakos County detectives in connection with a fire that destroyed a dormitory at the school on November 5, 2021.

Following investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Machakos county, the five were apprehended and are suspected of setting fire to a dorm at the school, resulting in the destruction of students’ and school property valued at $4 million.

They will face charges of arson and similar offences in court.

We advise parents and teachers to remind pupils about the costs of criminal behaviour on a regular basis.

The National Police Service (NPS) would take stern action against any criminals, their collaborators, and distributors of petroleum products and other flammables who are linked to school fires.

We urge our officers to ensure that fires in schools are thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators are brought to justice as soon as possible.

“Being a student does not absolve one from criminal responsibility. Arson is a serious offence and is punishable by life imprisonment. We ask parents and teachers to continuously remind students on the wages of every act of criminality.”
