Former National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) CEO Richard Kerich and four others face charges of conspiring to defraud the insurer of Sh117 million, according to the High Court.
In connection with the loss of millions of shillings earmarked for civil officials’ medical cover, Mr Kerich, along with four others and the Meridian Medical Centre, was accused.
Marwa Chacha, David Kipruto Chingi, Peter Ngunjiri Wambugu, and Ndiba Wairioko are the other defendants.
Mr Kerich, Mr Chacha, a former manager of strategy and corporate planning, and Mr Chingi, a former assistant manager of benefits and quality assurance, were found guilty by Nairobi chief magistrate Lawrence Mugambi.
Former NHIF officials are accused of agreeing to an agreement with Meridian when they knew the medical center couldn’t supply the services.
Mr Kerich, Mr Chacha, and Mr Chingi are also accused of abusing their positions by failing to follow procurement laws and giving Meridian a benefit of Sh43 million between December 21, 2011 and February 8, 2012.
Meridian was one of 173 facilities that replied to a request for proposals from the state’s medical insurance for the provision of outpatient services to civil personnel.
