Former Prison Chief Found Guilty Of Theft

A Rwandan court has sentenced a former Kigali prison chief to five years in prison for stealing money from a British citizen prisoner.

Innocent Kayumba has been sentenced along with his former aide, Eric Ntakirutimana, but they have appealed the decision.

The two have been convicted of theft of more than Ksh. 1.02 Million from the inmate’s county.

The theft took place through a bank card that the prison administration was holding.

The officials confiscated the card (Visa Card) after discovering that the bank account had money in it and then forced another prisoner who is well versed in technology to seize it.

The court has released the freed prisoner after convincing him that he was forced to do so by prison officials.

Kayumba, a senior military officer, was transferred to the prison authorities in 2014, as head of a prison in the West of the country before being transferred to Kigali.
