Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a list of six demands to Inspector General Douglas Kanja, citing serious concerns for his personal safety.
Gachagua called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals he claims are behind recent violent incidents targeting him. He stressed the need for heightened security at any public events he attends going forward.
“Ensure I am provided with security at all public gatherings I attend as a national leader,” Gachagua wrote.
He also requested that his personal security detail be strengthened without delay. The former Deputy President further demanded that police refrain from disrupting peaceful assemblies and accused the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of surveillance.
“Immediately halt the stalking and trailing of me and my family members by NIS officers and other security agencies,” he stated.
Among his other demands was the protection of his homes and personal property.
The letter, which was also addressed to President William Ruto, outlined several incidents that Gachagua described as threats to his safety. He attributed the violence at some of his public appearances to political motivations.
Since his falling out with President Ruto and removal from office, Gachagua has become an outspoken critic of the administration. He has often positioned himself as a lone voice of reason during his time in office and has since aligned himself with opposition figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Martha Karua (PLP), and Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K)—all of whom he campaigned against during the 2022 elections.
