Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba Vows To Do Her Work Without Fear

Gathoni Wamuchomba, Member of Parliament for Githunguri, has stated that she will continue to perform her duties without fear or favour.

This comes after she is said to have voted against the contentious Finance Bill 2023 on June 14 when it was presented to the National Assembly for debate.

Her opposition to the bill while serving as a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MP appears to have enraged party members and government supporters.

She has described the Finance Bill as “punitive, oppressive, and scandalous.”

Speaking at a Farmers Field Day in Githunguri, Kiambu County, on Saturday in the presence of President William Ruto, MP Wamuchoma stated that she will act on her legislative role and deliver to her constituents.

“Nawashukuru sana wakulima wangu kwa kunishikilia, kwa kuniombea na mimi ninaapa ya kwamba nitafanya kazi yangu kama mjumbe bila kuogopa na bila kuingiza baridi,” she said.

Taking the podium, President Ruto tested the waters to see if Githunguri residents agreed with MP Wamuchomba’s position.

He also urged residents to support the bill, claiming that it is part of a deliberate plan to help alleviate the harsh economic burden.

“Nasikia ati nyinyi watu wa Githunguri hamtaki mambo ya housing. Hawa vijana wote barabarani mtatoa wapi kazi ya kuwapatia,” said Ruto.

“Wabunge wote wamepiga kura kusema ya kwamba wacha tupange ajira ya hawa vijana mpaka wabunge wa upinzani wamekubali kwamba mpango wetu uko sawa na si tuendelee na hio barabara.”

The bill went through the Second Reading stage, with 176 Members of Parliament in support and 81 opposed.

The Bill is now scheduled for the Committee of the Whole House stage, where a Committee will meet to go over the Bill clause by clause.

Any proposed amendments are presented and voted on at the Committee of the Whole House stage.

It will then proceed to the report stage, where the House will vote on the report. Members may move the House to reconvene a Committee to reconsider any contentious provisions in the bill.

It will then move on to the report stage, where the House will vote on it as well. Members may request that the House reconvene in a Committee to reconsider any contentious provisions in the bill.

If the members vote in unison, the bill moves to the third reading for a final vote, and if passed, it is presented to the President for assent.
