Government warning on Fireworks during New Years eve

Kenyans wishing to display fireworks during the festive season have been urged to seek necessary licenses to avoid trouble with the law. – By Gerald Gekara.

Eng. John Mosonik, the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining said misuse of fireworks will be dealt with according to the law.

“Let us follow the regulations as laid down by the ministry of Mining. If you intend to display fireworks, don’t cross the year in jail for not following the law” CAS Mosonik said.

According to the Kenyan laws on Fireworks and Explosives, one is required to get a permit from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining offices in different regions in the country.

The event will also attract a licensing fee of Ksh. 5,000.

The applicant will only blast fireworks in venues authorised by an inspector of explosives.

These venues may include clubs, hotels, temples, sports grounds or school compounds. None of the licenses provide for residential areas.

Vendors who wish to sell and distribute fireworks will also be forced to adhere to the Act, which spells out strict guidelines on storing the highly explosive components.
