About 5,000 officers will be deployed along major highways in the country, in a bid to monitor instances of overloading, speeding and reckless drivers.

This comes at the backdrop of a spike in road accidents. Police Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai said a good number of accidents are caused by controllable behaviors.

“A good number of accidents have pointed to common traffic offences such as drunk driving overspeeding and overloading. We urge road users to take precautions towards their own safety,”

The agencies will now monitor bus fleets found breaking traffic rules, and charge the responsible persons accordingly.

The police boss also ordered redeployment of police officers on roads to monitor compliance as well as control traffic situations along roads.

So far, NTSA says the country has lost over 3600 people in the year 2020 to road accidents.
