Guinea’s ruling military came under international pressure today, with the African Union suspending the country for the coup last weekend and West African envoys arriving to settle the conflict.

The regional bloc Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) had already suspended Guinea after special forces led by Lt Col Mamady Doumbouya seized power on Sunday and arrested president Alpha Conde.

On Sunday, the African Union criticized the military coup and demanded Conde’s release. Conde was the country’s first democratically elected president in 2010.

Its decision came a day after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) suspended Guinea and announced that a mission will be sent to the nation to assess the situation.

The African Union’s Political Affairs, Peace and Security Council urged AU Commission President Moussa Faki to “engage with stakeholders in the region” on the problem.
