Harambee stars fail to shine at Comoros after a 2-1 defeat

Comoros are on the cusp of history following a 2-1 win over Kenya in a 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier at Stade Omnisports de Malouzini in Moroni on Sunday. – By Enock Mukoma

Victory, a second in four matches, moved Les Coelacantes up to eight points in Group G and on the cusp of qualifying for a first Afcon tournament in their history. Kenya have yet to win a match and remain on three points, two behind Egypt who are away to Togo on Tuesday.

Comoros held Kenya to a 1-1 stalemate at Moi International Sports Complex in Nairobi on Wednesday despite playing most of the game with 10-men and opened the scoring in Moroni in the 21st minute.

El Fardou Ben Mohamed found the back of the net with a fine finish to hand the island nation a deserved lead following a bright start.

Kenya pulled level in the 36th minute through Cliff Nyakeya who continued his good run for the Harambee Stars as the two teams proceeded to the tunnel at half-time deadlocked at 1-1.

Comoros restored their lead four minutes after the interval as Faiz Mattoir fired home and Les Coelacantes would hold on to claim a memorable win.

The island nation just need a single point to book their ticket to Cameroon with qualifiers at home to Togo and away to Egypt to come in March.
