IDPs vow to oppose BBI, accuses the government of ignoring their plight

Victims displaced during the 2007-08 Post Election Violence have cried foul over the Building Bridges Initiative’s failure to seek their views in compiling their report. – By Gerald Gekara.

Speaking to the media over their concerns, the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) living in Kisii say none of their issues regarding settlement and compensation has been honored by the government.

“We are just shocked that Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga did not even seek our audience on the BBI report, that’s why there is not a single recommendation that will help us as IDPs.” said one Timothy, a resident at the IDP camps.

They argued that the document could be made better if it dealt with atrocities of the past and ensure fair treatment of post election violence.

“This document is supposed to heal the nation of Election malpractices. At the very best it should appeal to people who are most affected by the election violence. We want Uhuru to address that.”

The IDPs lamented that they have been deserted by both National and local leaders despite having suffered during the post-election period.

IDPs have for long been promised a compensation package that has constantly fallen into supposed benefitiaries who do not live in the camps.

IDPs in Nyanza have costantly veen protesting over the awarding criteria and for a decade, continue living in in humanitarian tents issued by international foundations.
