A 22-year-old man died and another was hospitalised at Magadi Soda Hospital after being attacked by a hippopotamus in Shompole, Kajiado West.
The incident occurred after the men went fishing in the Ewaso Nyiro river before the hippo struck and killed one and seriously injured another.
Many cases of human-wildlife conflict have been reported in Kajiado County, particularly during the community’s current drought.
According to Lazarus Saigilu, the chairman of village elders, six people have died as a result of the hippo invasion in a year.
Humans and wild animals, according to Saigilu, cling to the dwindling water and cause conflict between them.
Human-wildlife conflict, according to Shompole location chief Denis Kuyia, is a common and deeply rooted problem in the region.
He has asked stakeholders and department of wild animals officers to take action and compensate residents.
In another incident, a middle-aged man from Oloorkunono in Mosiro ward is fighting for his life in Narok hospital after being attacked by an elephant.
The man is said to have suffered serious injuries after the elephant hit him on his abdomen.
