Hotels Decry Pain As Lockdown On Tourism Persists

As the Corona pandemic continues to take toll on business, around the world, Kilifi County hotels have been left counting huge losses.

Restaurants and hotels hard hit by the pandemic are like other facilities trying to struggle to keep their business afloat amid difficulties.

A spot-check by Uzalendo News in Kilifi town revealed that although at a slow pace, several restaurants are struggling to maintain their clientele and move on with the business.

One such facility is the Tamaduni Afrika Garden Resort

Located at Kiwandani near Kiwandani Secondary School in the suburb of Kilifi town, Tamaduni Afrika Garden Resort runs an amusement Park for adults and kids, hotel & bar.

Although it has the capacity to host more than 3,000 people, the facility has been running on a low key because of few revelers who come to whine their day away.

According to Dennis Chitavi, of Tamadui resort, the main challenge they are facing right now is low customers because of Covid-19.

“Our main challenge is the current situation in the country, the curfews, which hinders us from operating in full capacity as regards the working hours.

As a result, we are having a challenge in meeting our target capacity as we expected. For example the amusement Park has attracted low turnout since the lockdown and curfew was extended. It has affected our potential maximum revenues that we can accumulate if we could be operating under normal circumstances,” said Mr Chitavi.

His sentiments were echoed by Irene Otieno, the owner of Jombas Club along the Malindi-Mombasa highway past Kibaoni.

According to Ms Otieno there has been a loss if business caused by the lack of business. We are hopeful that the situation will be fine but under the new normal,” she said.
