How Sino Hydro changed lives of Ukambani

Kitui and Makueni counties are set to reap big from Corporate social responsibility projects led by the contractor of the upgrading of Kibwezi-Mutomo-Kitui-Kabati-Migwani road.

The contractor, Sinohydro Corporation Limited has set aside over Sh52million in CSR to offer solutions to challenges facing communities living along the road.

Some of the significant CSR projects include the repair and leveling,installing of bumps and signs at the Kwa Vonza Junction-Multi Road at a cost of Sh6.8million. Ikutha town will also benefit from construction of a buspark worth Sh6.6million.

Kibwezi DCC office will also gain a parking area with AC finishing at a cost of Sh2.2million.

Other CSR projects include maintenance of existing roads in the communities, construction of necessary amenities in various schools,colleges,dispensaries as well as drilling of boreholes, improvement if existing dams and provision of water tanks.

Further, the contractor has committed to undertake more CSR projects to improve the lives if the communities living along the road project.

“We will continue to collaborate with the local communities in our future CSR projects…we will focus on key areas of accessible education, security and health.” A statement from the contractor indicates.

The upgrading of the Kibwezi-Mutomo-Kitui-Kabati-Migwani Road is a project under the Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) and some sections of the road have been completed.

The 192 Kilometer road project under the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) starts at Kibwezi Town about 210km south of Nairobi and continues to the North through Ikutha and Mutomo to Kitui. It then proceeds to Kabati and onwards through Tulia to Migwani.

The upgrade of the road is meant to provide a direct route from Mombasa to Ethiopia on a direct alignment with less steep slopes, avoiding the need to pass through Nairobi.

The Contractor is set to complete the project in February, 2021.
