Iconic Nakumatt store bows out to ballooning Naivas Supermarket

Nakumatt’s is now down to 6 branches after losing upscale Nakumatt Prestige Plaza to Naivas Supermarket.

Frequent shoppers and tenants at the Ngong Road Mall woke up to a notice indicating the exit of the prestigious supermarket.

“Naivas Prestige will be open very soon and we look forward to your support. Sorry for any inconvenience caused,” read a notice from the management.

Nakumatt has been running into financial crisis and unpaid credit to its suppliers as well as its workers.

The entry of international shopping stores such as Game, who took over its Mega-City store in Kisumu, Souk, who took over from Nakumatt NexGen in Nairobi, Carrefour who is setting up shop at Nakumatt Mega in Nairobi, and the ever-expanding Naivas supermarket which has pulled most of the town center stalls.

As the retailer comes down, other players joining the industry, such as Quickmart Supermarket and South Africa’s Shoprite (who took over from Nakumatt Westgate) are set to encounter challenges as they get a foothold in the big retail business in Kenya.

Currently, Quickmart has a total of 11 stores: two in Nakuru, and one each in Kahawa Sukari, Ruiru, Waithaka, Eastern Bypass, Ruaka, Ruai and another at Thindigua along Kiambu Road.
