IEBC Falls Short Of Voter Targets

The failure to meet the voter registration objective is now being blamed on voter indifference and a delay in the distribution of ID cards, according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

As the enhanced voter registration drive came to a close on Sunday, it was revealed that the polling agency had failed its aim by a large margin.

Hardly 1.5 million of the 4.5 million new voters envisaged in the second phase of the improved voter registration campaign have been registered.

As of Saturday evening, the IEBC had registered 2,640 new voters in 12 countries in the diaspora.

They are in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Africa, South Sudan, the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Germany, and Canada.

Nairobi, Kiambu, and Mombasa had the most registrations, according to information provided at the end of the second week of the exercise.

Nairobi has 49,746 new voters, Kiambu has 26,544 new voters, and Mombasa has 17,958 new voters.

Overall, the Mt Kenya region’s ten counties, including Nakuru, have registered lower numbers than other regions. At the end of the second week of the exercise, the counties had only achieved 12% of their goal.

Nandi, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Bomet, and Elgeyo Marakwet, have achieved an average of 8.5 percent of their targets, with Nyanza and Coast achieving 21% each.
