IEBC resumes continuous voter registration ahead of 2027 elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially resumed the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

In a statement on Monday, September 29, the commission invited all eligible voters to visit their preferred IEBC constituency offices to register.

Kenyans wishing to transfer their registration details, update their voter particulars, or verify their information can also do so at the IEBC offices.

“The Commission invites all new eligible voters and those seeking transfer of registration status and update of voter particulars/information to visit their preferred IEBC constituency office,” IEBC stated.

To be eligible for voter registration, one must be a Kenyan citizen and of the age of 18 years and above.

Applicants are also required to have a valid Kenyan Identity Card (ID) or a valid Kenyan Passport and must not have registered as a voter before.

In addition, one should not have been convicted of an election offence in the past five years or declared to be of unsound mind.

The IEBC is planning to register at least 6.3 million new voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Monday morning, IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu disclosed that the commission has replaced the Biometric Voter Registration System (BVR) kits with tablets.

Nderitu explained that the BVR kits were bulky, prompting the commission to adopt lighter tablets instead.

“What is different in this voter registration is that we have a new system. Before the 2022 general election, the equipment for registration was the BVR kit.

“It was a bit cumbersome, but right now we only have a tablet we are using to register voters,” she revealed.

The IEBC Commissioner also said the electoral body will capture the fingerprints and iris of voters in the new voter registration system.

“We have also enhanced the features of that tablet. The registration system is now able to capture not only your fingerprints but also your iris, and it’s faster than the previous one,” Nderitu stated.

Several politicians, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have called on Kenyans to take advantage of the CVR drive and register themselves as voters.

“Your vote is your choice, your shield and your strength. The tool for change is the voters card, come out today and register as voters,” said Gachagua.
