The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have made a key stride in the Middle East war by launching a ground attack against Hamas in Gaza.
The IDF has often stated that this operation is not directed at the people of Gaza, but rather at removing Hamas infrastructure with the ultimate goal of restoring peace and security to the region.
The launch of a ground offensive follows days of heavy bombing on Gaza in response to Hamas rocket attacks on Israeli communities.
Israeli troops, tanks, and artillery units have been heavily mobilised for the ground operation. These forces have been stationed across Gaza.
Residents in these regions have been warned by the IDF to evacuate for their own safety.
Civilians in Gaza have also been instructed to avoid Hamas facilities and weapons storage areas, which are valid military targets.
While the IDF insists on taking every care to protect people, they accept the inherent hazards.
They have directed their troops to avoid civilian casualties and to conduct themselves with professionalism and prudence.
Nonetheless, they admit that totally avoiding civilian casualties in a densely populated location like Gaza is a tough undertaking.
According to the IDF, these bombings have significantly harmed Hamas’ military capability.
They do, however, believe that a ground operation is required to completely damage their infrastructure.
