BY FAITH MUTETE – Two journalists from Nation Media group were yesterday injured by police in Uganda as they were covering students demonstrations at Makerere University.
Alex Esagala and Geoffrey Twesigye, who work with NTV Uganda despite showing they were media people were fired at by two teargas canisters.
They were taken to hospital but the police blamed them for getting injured as they say that they always advised journalists to stay near police during such incidents since tear gas doesn’t discriminate any
one.
In light of this, the chairman of the Uganda Journalists Association has called upon all journalists to refrain from ‘lip servicing’ the Ugandan Police.
Speaking to the media, the chairman condemned the attack on the said journalists, urging all members of the press to join them in solidarity on Monday as they present their grievances to the Uganda Police Inspector General.
