Kakamega Health Authorities Probe Suspected Ebola Case

Kakamega Health officials say they are looking into a possible Ebola case.

According to officials, the patient had recently traveled to eastern Uganda to visit relatives.

In a statement released on Friday, Mumias West Disease Surveillance Co-ordinator Boaz Gichana said that the patient is currently at the St Mary Hospital isolation unit awaiting laboratory tests.

The government issued an Ebola alert last week, ordering travelers to be screened at border crossings with Uganda.

Kenya put border health officials on high alert last month after the World Health Organization (WHO) announced an Ebola investigation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Previous Ebola outbreaks and responses have demonstrated that early diagnosis and treatment with optimized supportive care, including fluid and electrolyte replacement and symptom management, significantly improves survival.

Close contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected animals such as fruit bats, chimps, gorillas, monkeys, forest antelope, or porcupines found ill or dead or in the rainforest usually introduces the disease into the human population.
