KeNHA- Foreign Truckers Tiff Over Axle Load

Kenya National Highways Authority has called on international transport companies to adhere to laid out regulations on trailer sizes stipulated by the law.

This is after five Ugandan lorries were impounded for abnormal modifications at Gilgil.

The lorry drivers have been charged over axle load manipulation offences.

In a response to concerns over delays at weighbridge check points, KENHA axle load control unit said the trucks are not fit for the country’s road infrastructure, and could lead to road damage.

“It is provided that no person shall operate a vehicle on the Regional trunk road networks unless it conforms to provided configurations in the first schedule. In the schedule a vehicle with a rigid body does not have more than three axles except for a vehicle with two steering axles.”

KeNHA said the trucks are unsafe and do not comply with the set axle limits therefore urging truck companies to adhere to laid out truck sizes.

“The questioned vehicles are rigid but with five (5)axles hence contravening the permissible provisions.”

As to whether the government was favouring its truckers as opposed to the foreign companies, Kenyan truckers were lauded for complying with axle load.

They further urged the respective authorities to enforce the East African legislation inorder to facilitate free movement within member states.
