The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert warning of strong winds and high waves expected to impact several regions across the country beginning Friday, May 23, 2025.
The Director of Meteorological Services, Dr. David Gikungu, said the strong southerly winds are being driven by powerful ocean currents in the Indian Ocean. Affected counties include Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.

Winds exceeding 30 knots (approximately 55 km/h) are expected to hit the Coast, South-Eastern lowlands, and North-Western Kenya on Friday. These winds are projected to intensify to over 35 knots (about 65 km/h) on Saturday and Sunday, before subsiding to 25 knots on Monday, May 26.
Dr. Gikungu also warned of ocean wave heights surpassing 2 meters along Kenya’s coastal waters from Friday through Sunday, with conditions expected to improve by Monday.
“Residents in the listed counties should be on the lookout for potential gale-force winds and large waves over the Indian Ocean,” he cautioned. “The strong winds may blow off roofs and cause structural damage to buildings.”
The warning extends especially to those engaged in marine activities, as the high waves may reduce visibility and disrupt operations at sea.
The Meteorological Department advises the public to exercise caution and follow official guidance as the weather system develops.
