Kenyan and Haitian police officers have successfully recaptured the strategic Port-de-Paix port after a intense gun battle with gang members who had occupied the facility since March 6, 2024.
According to Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission Commander Godfrey Otunge, the joint team, alongside Haitian National Police (HNP), also regained control of critical infrastructure, including a public hospital that was previously dominated by gangs.
“This operation is a major achievement for the MSS and HNP, and we will continue conducting our operations in Haiti after reclaiming the public hospital that was under the control of gangs,” Otunge said in a statement.
The operation follows Haitian Prime Minister’s declaration of a 30-day state of security emergency on July 17, 2024, affecting 14 cities across the nation.
The MSS has commended the Haitian government’s bold and decisive move to combat armed gangs and eradicate violence that has crippled the state.
The organization has assured the people of Haiti of its commitment to combating gangs and freeing the country from the grip of unending crime.
The successful operation marks a significant milestone in the efforts to restore stability and security in Haiti, which has been plagued by gang violence and crime for months.
The MSS and HNP will continue to work together to ensure the safety and security of the people of Haiti.
The recapture of Port-de-Paix port is seen as a crucial step towards restoring normalcy in the country’s economy, as it is a key entry point for goods and supplies.
The operation is also expected to boost confidence among local residents and foreign investors, who had been wary of investing in the country due to the prevailing security situation.
The MSS and HNP will continue to work together to address other security concerns in Haiti, including gang activity and crime.
